Why and when are plasters detectable by X-ray to be used?

Products packaged in metallised film or aluminium trays are normally passed through a conventional metal detection system before packaging. When this is not possible, products packaged in metallised containers must pass through a specialised X-ray inspection system.
The Detectaplast® X-ray plasters contain an X-ray detectable thread made of barium sulphate that has a very high density. As a result, these plasters will be detected by X-ray detectors and thus removed from the food chain. Barium sulphate is also used in the healthcare sector as a contrast agent when making X-rays.
